My Votes for 40th Anniversary Awards

Best Actor

Moses Chan and Ha Yu have the highest chances of winning the Best Actor primarily because they were both in Heart of Greed, which was perhaps this year’s most popular film. However, despite this, I would not say Moses gave the most terrific performance. Unlike some people who loves Moses’s comedy skills, he often times exaggerate his scenes and makes it quite annoying. On the other hand, Ha Yu definiately deserves recognition for his role as the father. His acting was superb, if not flawless! I have loved Ha Yu ever since My Family even though I didn’t like that series the least bit.

If it was last year, I would definitely vote for Raymond Lam because his character in La Femme Desperado captivated me the most; nonetheless Wah Jun Bong in The Drive of Life was pretty boring. It was not his acting, but his character didn’t have much sparks. Well, at least not as much as La Femme Desperado.

Michael Tao. He is one of the most underrated talents out there that TVB does not promote enough. Michael definitately gets more attention in ATV. He only gets like one series released each year and its not even one of the top series. However, his acting is just wonderful and he can portray any character imaginable out there. I was expecting that he was the lead male in On the First Beat, but it turned out that Ron and Sammul had more scenes. If anyone deserves the Best Actor award this year, it would be Michael, but his chance of winning is quite, if not, completely, slim. He has been acting since the 80’s and hasn’t received any awards for his hard work.

Best Actress

First of all, I cannot believes my eyes when I first read the list of names on this list. Kate Tsui? Linda Chung? Yoyo Mung? Christine Ng? Yes, Kate did improve tremendously in On the First Beat as the tomboyish and tough woman, but that will only get the Vastly Improved Actress Award. Her acting, in no way, meets the requirements of Best Actress. In addition, her chances of winning are slim because of her unpopularity with the audience. Linda has improved heaps since The Biter Bitten and she won the Most Improved Actress award last year. However, despite this, she still doesn’t deserve to be in the Best Actress cateogory. Her chances of winning, unfortunately, is very high because Heart of Greed was her breakthrough role, I must admit. As for Yoyo, her acting has always only been average in my opinion. Sometimes, I don’t like her accent. By the way, was she the lead actress in The Ultimate Crime Fighter or was Gigi the lead? Christine Ng. She’s just not popular enough to win.

Lee Szi Kei and Susanna Kwan have the highest chance of winning besides Linda Chung. However, this is all do to the popularity and high ratings of Heart of Greed. Heart of Greed is a great series, but it was not something I would really enjoy because it was about family matters. Sorry, not offense to the millions of you who love it. Please don’t kill me. Both Susanna and Li gave a wonderful performance, and if I had to choose, it would be Susanna even though her character was evil.

Sheren Tang deserved the award ages ago, but never received it. Well, not ages, but in 2004, her portrayal of Yu Fei was simply flawless! Well, yes, compared to Gigi Lai’s exaggerated version of Yuk Ying. In my opinion, Gigi’s acting was the worst among the four leading ladies even though she has improved tremendously in The Dance of Passion in 2006. Again, Sheren should’ve been recognized for her role as the independent Hilda in La Femme Desperado. Honestly, I cannot imagine anyone playing the role better than she did. However, last year, Charmaine stole the award for her portrayal of four different characters in Maiden’s Vow, which was also a terrific series, but did not meet my standards because Joe Ma was her co-star. If Sheren did not win the Best Actress in both 2004 and 2006, it is unlikely that she will this year, especially with the competition from the Heart of Greed cast. Furthermore, her character was completely the opposite from those previous two years. In The Family Link, she is weak and dependent on her husband. Her role did not capture my attention, but the acting was great as always.

I would probably chose Michelle Yim for Best Actress this year. The Brink of Law, was not the best series this year, but her character was one of the most interesting primarily because she was evil all the way! A terrific character in a tedious plot.

Myolie is another actress that should’ve won the award. Her acting is way more realistic and convincing that Charmaine. This is basically due to her strong voice compared to Charmaine’s weak and squeeky tone. War and Destiny was a wonderful series, one of the best last year, but Myolie’s character is not my favorite. She tends to exaggerate her scenes, but overall, she is a wonderful actress!

Best Supporting Actor

I say this award belongs to Derek Kwok! He has been acting for TVB for so many years now, hoping to take on a lead role. However, with the competition today, he chances of obtaining one is just almost zero. He was somewhat funny in The Family Link, but overall, he’s a great actor!

Best Supporting Actress

First, I would never vote for Toby Leung nor Natalie Tong for best supporting. At least, not at this moment. They are two newbies whose acting are the lousiest, despite the fact that TVB insist on promoting them. The way they speak is very weak, especially Toby who tends to drag her lines. I’m quite surprised that Charmaine Li was nominated for best supporting and Selena Li was on the list for improvement. I like Charmaine, but I didn’t see Men Don’t Cry, so I cannot judge her acting. I’m quite happy that Florence was nominated for best supporting, but her role in On the First Beat was quite insignificant and I did not like the series overall.

Leila Tong and Mimi Lo is probably who I would vote for. Leila, in my opinion, qualifies to be Best Actress already, but she still haven’t won the improvement award. She is way beyond the improvement point already. She entered the industry at the age of eight, proved her acting abilites, but yet, still doesn’t receive any recognition for her solid acting. This is probably due to the promotion of many new actresses today like Linda Chung who already qualifies for Best Actress this year. Furthermore, Leila is also not contracted with TVB. Mimi Lo. I never liked her until A Change of Destiny. The first half of the series, Mimi’s character was one of the most interesting and fun to watch–that is before she married Joel Chan who caused her to turn crazy. When I saw the cast, I wasn’t planning on watching this series, especially when Mimi irritated me so much in practically all the series she has been in (except LWOLAP). However, I can never be so wrong! Her acting was great!

Fala also has a high chance of winning. Yes, she was in Heart of Greed, but she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Steps. I have seen only one episode of Steps. I think Fala is really pretty, but still can’t stand her accent.

My vote goes to Leila! Also, I think Mimi qualifies more for the improvement cateogory.

Favorite Male Character

First, I must admit that I cracked up when I saw Joe Ma as Ngai Wing Biu on this list. How can someone possibly find him to be their favorite character? Honestly, he was the reason I stopped watching The Drive of Life. Raymond and Moses’s character in Heart of Greed has a high chance of winning. Although I don’t think Moses deserve the Best Actor, he was definitely one of my favorite characters in Heart of Greed. His character was very warm and caring towards everyone. On the other hand, I didn’t like Raymond as much. He was ambitious, indifferent, and unfaithful.

If it was not for Moses, I think I will go for Michael Miu as my favorite male character. He was already very humorous and his acting is way better than Moses. However, Miu’s character did not express the warmth and kindness I found in Moses’s character.

Favorite Female Character

I think I would probably vote Leila Tong or Shirley Yeung for my favorite female character. Leila had a fun and witty character in The Family Link. She was witty and all. I also enjoyed Shirley’s refreshing role as the evil Kelly in The Brink of Law. Since, Leila I voted Leila for Best Supporting, I chose Shirley for Favorite Female Character. I must say that TVB did not produce too many good characters this year; most of their series are very character. My favorite character is probably Selena Li and Sum Yi in A Change of Destiny, but her character was not nominated.

Most Improved Actor

Jack Wu. Without a doubt though his acting has been superb since the beginning. My first Jack series was To Grow with Love and his acting was practically flawless. I think TVB should move him to the Best Supporting Actor category.

Most Improved Actress

Selena Li. Her acting way better than Kate, but yet, Kate gets nominated for Best Actress, but she is still in the improvement cateogory. Like I said, Mimi also had improved a lot in A Change of Destiny.
