TVB 40th Anniversary Pics

Hello everyone! No update in a long time. I know it’s a little too late to post my comments on this year’s anniversary dresses (it’s a month already), but I’ve been really busy with school lately. Now that it’s Winter Break, I have more time to update! Enjoy!

Credits to Jayne Stars for pics

Favorite Dress. Fala Chen. In terms of colors and style, Fala’s stress is by far my favorite. She looks absolutely gorgeous in the dress and the necklace perfectly matches the color of her dress.
Other Favorites. Charmaine Sheh and Gigi Lai. I liked Charmaine’s dress more than Gigi’s despite the fact that Gigi’s dress was more valuable. Actually, I liked Charmaine and Fala’s dressed equally the same. While Fala’s dress is more elegant and sophisticated, Charmaine’s dress is plain, but I love the style and color. Gigi’s dress was nice, but a little too over-decorated. I prefer the plainness in Charmaine’s style more. Also, Dodo had a nice dress except that I thought it was quite funny that it was so long. The style and color was great. She looks extremely stunning for her age.
Least Favorite Dress. Charmaine Li. The worst dress of the year. First, red is already not my favorite color. I have always prefered white or black for anniversary dresses. Yes, I know red is a very capturing color, but that’s not why I don’t like her dress. The red flower in the front of the dress makes her look like she’s pregnant or something.
Other Least Favorites. Lisa Wang, Sharon Chan, Kate Tsui, Myolie Wu, Sheren Tang, Tavia Yeung, Bernice Liu, Selena Li, and Angela Tong. I don’t like Lisa’s dress because it just doesn’t suit her age. Sorry, no offense, but it makes her look like an ostrich. Sharon’s dress is too wrinkled and I thought she pulled it a little too high. Kate’s dress just doesn’t look like an anniversary dress, but I think it quite suits her playful and wild personality. The makeup was horrible and she overdosed on it. Myolie’s dress had a bad style and was too plain. It made her seem like she didn’t care about the anniversary. Sheren’s dress was nice except for the holes in between. Tavia’s dress had a good style, but a dull color. Not a very pleasing color. Probably because I’m use to the strapless or spaghetti strap dresses, so I didn’t like Bernice’s. It made her look too aggressive. Selena’s dress had a nice style, but I thought it was over-decorated. The color could also be better. Angela’s gown was nice for the most part and I could only blame myself for not liking it because it really doesn’t suit my personality. Such a wild dress with so many different colors.
Other Dresses. I’m a little disappointed that Linda’s dress was only average because she was one of the spotlights this year for her role in Heart of Greed. I liked Michelle’s dress. The green was nice, not too apparent, but not dull either. Nancy, like always, is too thin. The blue is nice, but it could be better. Sonija’s dress was plain. Not much comment. Yoyo had a nice dress as well. Somehow her dress reminds me of Chirstmas. Shirley’s dress was nice, but nothing special. Toby’s dress was okay, but she didn’t really look good in it.

Upcoming 2008 TVB Series

TVB is releasing/filming another 20 or more series next year and after reviewing, I would probably only watch 6 of the 20 or more. The following are probably some I would watch.

Heart of Greed II

Yeah, as much as I did not go crazy over HOG, I will still watch the sequel to it. Will they be able to release it next year if the filming is beginning in February?

Jewels’ Splendor

80-episode series! But I love Ada, Maggie, and Gigi. So I think it’s worth it. I hope the rivalry is interesting. According to TVB Sales Presentation Clip, the story does look captivating and for once they are producing something grand and serious as opposed to the comedic and humorous plots. But seriously, I don’t know if I will have time to watch it. Watching Jewel’s Splendor is like watching four TVB productions, each 20 episodes! TVB made a big deal out of The Drive of Life last year since it was for the British returning Hong Kong; initially, the series was pretty good, but I got weary of it by the end. They could’ve decreased the number of episodes to like 40 or something, but again, there was too many popular stars in such a series and it is hard to develop each one if the series was too short. Still, I barely managed to finish a 30-episode series, let alone a 80-episode series.

However, the plot does sound very interesting. I love to watch rivarly, revenge, hatred, passion, etc. The series will get very instense between the three sisters and it’s very breath-taking. In addition, I am also interested in watching Linda Chung’s snooty and spoiled character. I haven’t seen her in such a role yet; she has been playing good girls in both Heart of Greed and The Biter Bitten. Wonder if she will do a good job here. She completely captured by attention during the clip when she calls the three sisters “old”. Even though she only had one line, I’m really looking forward to the series.

The Four Young Constables

I haven’t seen the Sales Presentation Clip for this series, but this is something I will definitely watch! I prefer Ray in more and he didn’t have any this year so I am really looking forward to this one even though Kate will be his co-star. Also, I’m interested in Selena even though I think her acting is better ancient series than Kenneth’s. Hope TVB would swap the pairings in here.

Thirteen Treasures

According to clip I’ve watched, this series really interests me and I hope it will not end up as 2007’s Devil’s Disciples. However, is Shirley the only female in the series? She only had one line in the clip, but it seems like her character is more serious and responsible compared to her previous playful roles. She looks exceptionally beautiful in those ancient costumes. However, I really despise Ngok Wah; hope TVB will replace him with someone else. It’s pretty predictable that Ron and Shirley will probably end up together. By the way, is Shirley playing a princess because I heard she called Ngok Wah “Fu Wong”. If that is so, it’s so cool! Longed to see Shirley play a princess. The cast doesn’t seem strong, but I’m interested in ancient dramas more than modern ones. What interests me was when Ngok Wah’s character was speaking of the ancient proverbs and military tactics in the clip. Nevertheless, I still despise the computer effects and exaggeration of TVB’s ancient series these days. Furthermore, and people could fly here. Come on…

If I remember correctly, TVB have released a prouduction by the same Chinese Title, Sup Sam Tai Bo, right? However, the English title was The Wild Bunch in 1982 starring Felix Wong, Idy Chan, and Kent Tong. I’ve longed to watch this series since like forever, but can’t find it in Cantonese. It was set during the Tang Dynasty, the same as Thirteen Treasures will be.

Thieves of Principles

Don’t know whether or not the plot will be good, but definitely watching it because it’s Idy’s first series after returning to TVB (even though it might not be permanent). The clip did not reveal much of the story, but I’m quite uninterested in the plot and the actors, especially Fala and Joe.

Suspicious Heart

With an extremely captivating plot, this appears to be a very suspenseful series. People are so glad that Anita is returning to TVB, but I’ve only seen her act in one series by far and it’s with ATV. Her character was small so it was hard to judge her acting. If she has left TVB for 15 years, then she probably haven’t even acted for TVB before since it meant she left in 1992 and she was Miss Hong Kong in 1990. Looks like Tracy Ip and Ellesmere Choi will have a love affair here and it looks quite interesting as it lead to their murder. It’s also Mandy Cho’s return to the screen after TVB froze her for like two years. Hope to see Mandy improve and good luck to Tracy as I heard that in one scene, she had like 50 retakes.

When A Dog Falls in Love with a Cat

Um…I really don’t understand what TVB is thinking. I can not find anything interesting when I first heard the title. Even though you’re not suppose to judge a book by it’s title, I doubt that there is anything within the story. Yet, TVB has it’s best stars in here like Gallen Lo and Myolie Wu. I’m looking forward to Margie’s character. She’s looks so cute in one of her scenes in the clip.

Best Supporting Actor- Louis Yuen Siu Cheung (Heart of Greed)
Best Supporting Actress- Fala Chen (Steps)
Best Series – Heart of Greed
Most Improved Actor- Amigo Chiu

Favorite Actress in China- Gigi Lai
Best Host- Harlem Yu and Patrick Tang
Best Variety Show – On the Road
Best Promotional Clip – The Drive of Life
Most Creative Show – Foodie 2 Shoes
Special Achievement Award- Lydia Shum

I am actually not a bit surprised that the Heart of Greed cast brought home all of the awards for TVB’s 40th Anniversary since it was this year’s most talked about series. If you look at the awards, all the awards were presented to the HOG cast, except for Fala Chen who won for her performance steps (however, Fala was also in HOG).

It was predicted by most, or even all, newspapers, that Moses and Lee Si Kei will win this year and they did. There was no suspense here. Nevertheless, Kate did surprise me in winning the Most Improved Actress award this year. Even though she have improved in her performances especially in On the First Beat as the tough police, her experience was just not enough to win that award compared to the others who have been in TVB for more years. However, TVB appears to want to promote Kate more than anyone else in that cateogory. I was hoping that Selena will win although many people cheered for Fala and Bernice. Also, I did not like the fact that Charmaine Sheh was nominated for Best Actress for Glittering Days and not for The Drive of Life. Her characters in these two series are completely opposites: weak, old-fashioned, and annoying in GD, but manipulative, intelligent, and diplomatic in TDOL. No offense to any Charmaine fans, but I was glad tht she did not win. I didn’t really have to worry because it was very likely Lee Si Kei will win already.

As for the Best Supporting Actress, I was totally hoping that Leila will take home the award. She has been with TVB for so many years and haven’t even won the Improvement Award. So sad because all the newbies are getting promoted which means that Leila will have a very low chance of winning.

Okay, I was really hoping that Derek’s loyalty and acting paid off, but I guess not because Louis won the award. I never really liked this actor, but he did seem to improve in HOG. I also heard that Benz Hui really deserved the award, but I didn’t know who he was in the beginning so I didn’t vote for him. I mean, I knew the actor and I have seen him in countless series; it’s just that I didn’t know he had an English name. I always knew him as Hui Siu Hung and not Benz. Benz totally deserves the award more than Louis or Derek, if you ask me. He’s just a talented and humorous actor. Also, he has been acting for TVB for more than 20 years and one of the best supporting actors ever. I remember seeing his series in the 1980’s and he was superb as always! I think Louis belong in the improvement category more than best supporting.

I’m not surprised that Susanna won, but quite surprised that Linda didn’t win anything. Well, not quite because she was in competition with Lee Si Kei.

I don’t have a clue who this Amigo Chiu is, but heard that he’s a host and TVB wants to promote him. But that really doesn’t have anything to do with acting. Jack Wu is a much better actor!

Heart of Greed was the best series of the year! Duh. I not surprised like everyone else. I think it’s not the best, but the most favorite because it was well-received by the audience.

Even though I’m not a big HOG fan, I really enjoyed Moses’s character. He was so nice to people, especially Linda.

I’m really glad that Raymond won something this year. Although he did not win best actor, it doesn’t mean that he’s not a good actor, only that people loved Moses and Heart of Greed more. TVB awards are becoming so meaningless and predictable nowadays. Ray won favorite actor in China and I’m so happy to hear that because he does have so many fans worldwide. It was rumored that Charmaine Sheh will win the Favorite Actress in China, but Gigi brought home the award instead. I actually like Gigi a bit more than Charmaine.

Favorite Calender. September 2008 is my favorite one. I love the solemn mood and the chipaos the actresses are wearing and their stance, especially Sharon Chan and Natalie Tong, whom I am not very fond of most of the time. Natalie, I mean, not Sharon. I usually don’t like Bowie, but I must admit that he looks pretty hot in that picture along with Gigi Lai, who is a pure beauty. The December calender is also an exceptional one. Everyone looks happy and I love Myolie’s smile. Raymond Cho is great as well.
Least Favorite Calender. October 2008 is the worse to me. A theme at the airport, dressing casually, but happily, just isn’t captivating to me. It’s looks like everyone is all scatter and looking their own way. The clothes they are wearing looks so tedious even though its suppose to be that way. No offense to those who like it.
Most Obvious Calender. It’s no surprise to me that Raymond Lam and Linda Chung are paired up. I’m not a big fan of them, but don’t hate them either. Afterall, Linda and Raymond is probably the new couple that is mostly discussed about this year after the release of Heart of Greed. Nevertheless, I’m quite surprise that people like Lee Sze Kei, Michelle Yim, and Ha Yu are not in the calender since they are this year’s hotties. Susanna Kwan is the only one in the calender.
Newbies. Okay, as you can see, I did not have all the names listed under each month’s calender. Well, that is because I don’t even know some of those people. Really, TVB calender’s are getting so cheap nowadays even though the themes are quite creative each year. Honestly, anyone could be on the calender. As long as you are promoted, you stand a chance. People like Elaine Yiu, Queenie Chu, Sharon Luk, Suki Chiu, and Koni Lui are all participants in some pageant contest (with the exception of Elaine) and all heavily promoted by TVB today. I haven’t even seen any of their performances except for Elaine, who gets very insignificant roles and I hardly notice her acting.
Who’s Not Here. Leila Tong. She has only been in TVB calenders for one year. The 2004 one if I remebered correctly. Probably because she’s not a contracted artist, but Sammul Chan isn’t and he’s here. Jack Wu is another one who is quite popular among the audience and isn’t here either.
